“Gideon? Who are the flowers for?”

Gideon met eyes with Naomi across the huge bouquet and settled the vase in the center of the dining table. She bent down and inhaled, cupping one of the fragrant blooms in her hand.

“Those are from Lane for his wife.”

Her eyebrows rose, but she didn’t straighten.

“He doesn’t know it yet.”

A smile on her lips, she sank into a chair. “What are you up to?”

No sooner had the question emerged, then his mother walked into the kitchen. She came to a halt, her gaze narrowing. “You’ve been back to that ...”

“Velma Boone! That’s enough.”

Naomi’s sharp tone caused Gideon to leap. Never since his brother married over a decade ago had he heard her speak like that.

“Of all the people who should be grateful for kindness, you’re at the top of the list.”

“Why, I never ...”

“No, you listen to me.” Naomi pointed one finger at her. “You live in my home. You eat my food. I wash up after you. I do your laundry. All of it without a complaint.”

“This seems like one,” his mother replied.

Naomi’s gaze only grew harder.

“It’s me being entitled to have my say ... and you have two loving sons, despite how you treated them. You’ve never bothered to acknowledge that. Things could have ended differently. They could have been taken away and you never see them again. They could have been resentful and turned their backs on you, left you in some ... home.”

His mother’s eyes filled with what looked like guilt. Her hands shaking, she pulled out a chair.

“Furthermore ...” Naomi seemed to soften some, but she didn’t let up. “Miss Lincoln has been through more than we have any idea.”

Gideon’s brow wrinkled, involuntarily. “What do you mean?”

Naomi stared at him and seemed to debate with herself. She pulled in a deep breath. “She’s agreed to come to our celebration meeting ... You know, survivors that meet each month, and it’s nothing she said ... She didn’t actually say anything. But I have this feeling she’s lost ... a-a lot.”

The abuse. He’d picked up on the abuse she’d suffered. But what could she have lost? It hit him, in a breath, and his chest caved. A baby. She’d lost a child, and he’d bet her boyfriend ... husband ... whatever, caused it.

“I’m just speculating, you understand, and don’t either of you ...” She scowled at his mother. “Say one word to anyone. It’s her story.”

A painful, awful story and the reason she distrusted him. She distrusted anyone male, he suspected. Deservedly so. But knowing gave him an idea what he was looking at, and greater ... at where he needed to be. If he was serious about her, and his heart said he was, then he needed to come home. He’d have to commute some, probably travel a lot more. Looking at his mother, though, and thinking of Naomi and Lane, and now, Jayde, he needed to be here. Trust couldn’t grow with so many miles between them.

“I know what to sing tonight,” he said.
